winning streak!

Maybe it’s just my mood, but I’m just tickled with my last two frozen confectionary choices at The Dairy Lodge this past week: cherry pie flurry and a sundae with 1/2 chocolate sauce and 1/2 peanut butter topping, topped with spanish peanuts. I’m not sure what to call it, but my friend, Sandy, recommended it so I will call it Sandy’s Sundae. Ooh la la! Why haven’t I tried peanut butter topping before this? This might get dangerous. Sigh.

ice cream on the lens makes it appear almost deliberately artsy. Almost.

Honestly, it must be my mood because I don’t really even like cherry pie, but I loved every bite and slurp and lick of the cherry pie flurry. Honest! The punch of the tart cherries was a great complement to the creamy vanilla ice cream and the graham cracker pie chunks added another layer of intrigue and interest, which kept me munching ’til the last bits at the bottom were going, going, gone. The presentation was lovely too – cherry pie filling drizzled on top…

Oh! And a I tried some of a lime slush and a coney dog too.  That was dinner for Chris and I thought it seemed like a strange combination, but it turned out to be a great juxtaposition of tart, sweet and salty. Not to mention colorful!

What have you tried lately, dear readers? Anything you’d like to recommend?

Toasty!

I am almost never disappointed if something contains coconut so when I saw that the frozen yogurt flavor of the day was “Toasted Coconut,” I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. A baby cone full of swirly toasted coconut goodness? Please and thank you. The little birdie even got her own baby twist in a cup and had a ball learning to perfect the art of eating from a spoon. Aaah, summer.

I forgot to post a few other items I’ve tried lately, but don’t have pictures for… fresh strawberry milkshake? In a word, divine. In honor of the Cherry Festival, I tried the wild cherry frozen yogurt and it had a nice, refreshing kick to it. I was hoping for a fresh cherry sundae, but no such luck. I also had a few sips of a raspberry slush, which hit the spot on a hot summer evening.

What have you had lately? Next I want to try a sundae with chocolate and peanut butter. Doesn’t that sound amazing?

Baby’s first cone

For our wee one’s first birthday, we let her get her own cone. A baby twist, of course! Maybe all the trips to the Dairy Lodge have instilled in her how to hold a cone and eat it like a big girl because she did great! I’m not sure if this says more about our parenting skills or her own set of skills…

How fun!

cone contemplations…

On our walk last night we found ourselves lured over to the Dairy Lodge for a cone. Or two. Or three.

Chris got a baby twist. He’s always so smart and sensible in his frozen confectionary choices. Classic yumminess. Can’t lose with that choice especially when it puts you back a mere $.65. Wow!

I decided to try a baby chocolate cone dipped in “Twinkle.” Sounds yummy and looks fun, right? What the heck IS “Twinkle” anyway? Sugary goodness meets stale peanuty brittleness. Was it a good choice? No. Stick with the Cosmo.

So where does the third cone come in? Well, thanks for asking. When I was down to the Twinkle cone with some chocolate ice cream left, I dropped it on the ground. Boo hoo! So I decided to grasp the opportunity to fork over another $.83 for a baby vanilla cone dipped in cherry. Because Traverse City is known as the Cherry Capital of the Universe, I thought I was in for a real treat. Plus I have really fond memories of cherry dip from the Dairy Queen in Romeo.

And, isn’t the color absolutely divine?

Although its looks are stunning, the cone left me feeling like I had eaten a candle. After throwing most of that cone away, we started walking down the sidewalk saying, “wax on, wax off, wax on, wax off.” Again, stick with the Cosmo if you’ve got a hankerin’ for a dipped cone.

What should I try next? What’s your favorite kind of sundae, dear readers? Me thinks I’m seeing a simple sundae with some kind of fruity topping in my near future…

Happy Earth Day!

Save the Earth. Eat a cone!

Well, that’s quite a stretch, isn’t it? Yes, Styrofoam is terrible for the environment, but are we really saving Mother Nature by indulging in an ice cream cone? Let’s find out.

I gave the dairy a break for a bit and grabbed one of the Dole Whip cones. Mango! It was actually very tasty and would’ve only been better had it not been 40 degrees and windy. Again! It’s a bit on the refreshingly, cool, icy side of the confection world. Delightful!

Cosmo.

Ooh, la, la, folks. You’re in for a serious taste and texture adventure when you order a cone dipped in Cosmo. We three shared a small twist dipped in Cosmo, which is a super smart edible invention. The cone is first rolled in fresh, crunchy Rice Krispies then dipped in chocolate. Mmmmm. And yes, this is a ‘small’ cone in the picture. Perfect for a family of 2.5 to share I swear. No wonder Chris usually likes to order a ‘baby’ twist dipped in Cosmo. Smart and economical! A baby twist is only .65. Cosmo will put you over a buck, but it’s worth it.

Last summer we thought we found a hidden gem when we stumbled upon the Cosmo cone. Turns out it’s pretty popular. For good reason. Enjoy!

Sundae #1.

Small vanilla sundae with hot fudge & spanish peanuts.

So the quest officially has begun and I’m pretty sure that Chris thinks I’ve lost my mind and my Dad said to me, “but honey, what will you do with all those calories?” I will admit that they’re both right. Sort of. So here’s the inside scoop (no pun intended.) I’m simply “trying” everything on the menu and if I’m feeling generous, I’ll surely share with Chris and Wren and anyone else who might like to join me. There’s your open invitation, folks. And I’m not eating there every single day. And I’m not getting anything bigger than a “small” this or that. A large flurry will surely not taste different than a small, but it will make me feel horrible so I’m not even going there. In full disclosure, no one is paying me to do this either. In fact, The Dairy Lodge doesn’t even know about my quest yet. Yet. blah blah blah.

So what did we think of the sundae?! It was fantastic and only $2.45 for 2.5 people. The juxtaposition of sweet hot fudge sauce (could be thicker) and salty spanish peanuts is almost poetic. It would be awfully dramatic for me to say so though, wouldn’t it? Try it. You can’t lose with this choice. Chris asked where the whipped cream was, but I didn’t miss it. And Wren wondered what the heck we were doing eating ice cream when it was 40ish and wearing winter caps, while keeping our faces turned away from the breeze blowing off West Bay. Yeah, she thinks I’ve lost my mind too.

Open!

Yahoo, the Dairy Lodge is open for the 2010 season! Chris (the one in the picture with the Chris patch…) and I took Wren for her first Dairy Lodge cone this week: a small vanilla with colored sprinkles, my personal stand-by favorite! (Do you say sprinkles or jimmies in your neck of the woods?) Mixed reviews from the babe, but we were thrilled. Give her time…

I have a gripe about sprinkles (err, jimmies). I can’t find an ice cream place that offers the ones in my vibrant ice cream memory bank: longer, thinner, crunchier with a wider variety of colors. Sigh. One more reason to keep trying! What’s your opinion, dear readers?
