winning streak!

Maybe it’s just my mood, but I’m just tickled with my last two frozen confectionary choices at The Dairy Lodge this past week: cherry pie flurry and a sundae with 1/2 chocolate sauce and 1/2 peanut butter topping, topped with spanish peanuts. I’m not sure what to call it, but my friend, Sandy, recommended it so I will call it Sandy’s Sundae. Ooh la la! Why haven’t I tried peanut butter topping before this? This might get dangerous. Sigh.

ice cream on the lens makes it appear almost deliberately artsy. Almost.

Honestly, it must be my mood because I don’t really even like cherry pie, but I loved every bite and slurp and lick of the cherry pie flurry. Honest! The punch of the tart cherries was a great complement to the creamy vanilla ice cream and the graham cracker pie chunks added another layer of intrigue and interest, which kept me munching ’til the last bits at the bottom were going, going, gone. The presentation was lovely too – cherry pie filling drizzled on top…

Oh! And a I tried some of a lime slush and a coney dog too.  That was dinner for Chris and I thought it seemed like a strange combination, but it turned out to be a great juxtaposition of tart, sweet and salty. Not to mention colorful!

What have you tried lately, dear readers? Anything you’d like to recommend?

94 in May?

Can it be too hot for ice cream? In my (err, humble?) opinion, yes. When the needle hits 94, I don’t feel much like consuming anything. Except for maybe lots of cool beverages. So we ventured into the “slushie” category today at the Dairy Lodge. Flavors? Watermelon and black raspberry pomegranate (doesn’t that sound super fancy?!).

While I doubt there were any antioxidant benefits in the latter, it was the most refreshing of the two. The watermelon slushie was super-duper sweet. Almost thick with sugar. Too sweet for a blistering hot day. Black raspberry pomegranate hit the spot. My only complaint is that this frozen sugar water seems pretty expensive ($1.25 for a small) compared to a cone. I don’t know the economics of slushies, do you, dear readers?

a Michigan thing

75 and sunny sure make the people come out of hibernation and need a cone. Both windows were still open around 10 p.m.

And we had a hankerin’ for one of our favorite Michigan-style treats: a Vernors Ginger Ale float. Actually–truth be told–I prefer the cooler (Boston Cooler, some say) form of the frozen confection, but a float it was. And did it ever hit the spot. Vanilla ice cream should definitely marry ginger ale. They are just meant to be together! Speaking of Vernors and ice cream, does anyone remember the Vernors brand ice cream that you used to be able to get at Sanders in the Detroit area? I think Stroh’s used to make it. That used to be my favorite when I was a kiddo.

Thanks for another great night, Dairy Lodge!

man-sized

Not only do I get more than my fair share of sugar and fat with my Dairy Lodge Diet, but a healthy dose of social interaction accompanies each visit. The other day, we met a lovely man who had a great sense of humor. And a penchant for chocolate shakes. Big ones. I asked him what he ordered and he said he got the biggest shake he could get. He said, “real men only drink big shakes.” He also shared with us that his dietician recommended he only eat half a cookie and he responded with an emphatic, “yeah right, who only eats half a cookie?!” Now that’s my kind of guy.

So what did we order? I was inspired by Mr. Go Big or Go Home and got a small ‘cookies and cream’ flurry. Tasted great with just the perfect amount of cookie bits, big and small. I’m not a huge fan of the big candy bar chunks in a flurry, but cookies AND ice cream? Heaven sent.

Weather looks ominous (wintery mix…40) in our neck of the woods so I might not be posting for a few days… Have a great weekend, dear readers! Any frozen confectionary consumption in your plans?

you had me at whipped cream

Aside from more obvious reasons, one thing I love about my husband is that he loves chocolate. And whipped cream. In fact, he would be content to have a bowl of whipped cream for dessert. It was Chris’s turn to pick the frozen confection last night and he chose a chocolate malt–made with chocolate ice cream–topped with whipped cream. Lovely! It tasted great, but begged for more malt powder. Barely a hint of malt. And when I order a malt, I don’t mean a shake; I mean a malt. Extra calories, please and thank you. No cherry on top, ewwww.

Anyone have some time on their hands and want to invest in the development of a great new product? How ’bout inventing something that continuously dispenses the whipped cream until you’re at the bottom of the dessert? What do you think?

slurp!

Yesterday I was craving something sweet and creamy, but mostly sweet. Did I say sweet?

So I delved into the shake arena and ordered a small Pina Colada shake. And, you know what? It was SWEET. Just what I wanted. But. Like I always feel with a milkshake, the first few sips or so (or even 1/2 of it) taste great and by the time I’ve downed the whole thing I end up feeling a bit yucky. But I finished it. No surprise there! Then I went for a long walk to help digest all that sweet dairy. Today I ran 7 miles so I’m thinking I might have burned it off by now. Might.

Remind me next time I order a Pina Colada shake that I should bring a shot of rum with me. Doesn’t that sound like a good idea?
