Maybe it’s just my mood, but I’m just tickled with my last two frozen confectionary choices at The Dairy Lodge this past week: cherry pie flurry and a sundae with 1/2 chocolate sauce and 1/2 peanut butter topping, topped with spanish peanuts. I’m not sure what to call it, but my friend, Sandy, recommended it so I will call it Sandy’s Sundae. Ooh la la! Why haven’t I tried peanut butter topping before this? This might get dangerous. Sigh.

Honestly, it must be my mood because I don’t really even like cherry pie, but I loved every bite and slurp and lick of the cherry pie flurry. Honest! The punch of the tart cherries was a great complement to the creamy vanilla ice cream and the graham cracker pie chunks added another layer of intrigue and interest, which kept me munching ’til the last bits at the bottom were going, going, gone. The presentation was lovely too – cherry pie filling drizzled on top…

Oh! And a I tried some of a lime slush and a coney dog too.  That was dinner for Chris and I thought it seemed like a strange combination, but it turned out to be a great juxtaposition of tart, sweet and salty. Not to mention colorful!

What have you tried lately, dear readers? Anything you’d like to recommend?

I am almost never disappointed if something contains coconut so when I saw that the frozen yogurt flavor of the day was “Toasted Coconut,” I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. A baby cone full of swirly toasted coconut goodness? Please and thank you. The little birdie even got her own baby twist in a cup and had a ball learning to perfect the art of eating from a spoon. Aaah, summer.

I forgot to post a few other items I’ve tried lately, but don’t have pictures for… fresh strawberry milkshake? In a word, divine. In honor of the Cherry Festival, I tried the wild cherry frozen yogurt and it had a nice, refreshing kick to it. I was hoping for a fresh cherry sundae, but no such luck. I also had a few sips of a raspberry slush, which hit the spot on a hot summer evening.

What have you had lately? Next I want to try a sundae with chocolate and peanut butter. Doesn’t that sound amazing?

In the meantime, I just remembered that I forgot to post a flurry from a while back. Such a long time ago that I can’t even remember when, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t even officially summer yet. So that’s my big “oops.”

And our flurry choice was also a big “oops.” This spring, we were really into pretzels. Every night for a while, we’d sit on the porch and eat pretzels. And chat, people-watch and eat more pretzels. So when we went to the Dairy Lodge and saw the sign that proclaimed that they were offering a new flurry flavor, pretzel (!), I jumped. I think I even squealed on the inside. But we kind of had a hankering for chocolate too so we decided to order a half Take Five, half pretzel flurry. But Take Five already has pretzel in it! Yes. Did I mention we were on a pretzel kick?

So… it was terrible. Ice cream and pretzels, which are two of my favorite foods, really should not be combined. So I picked around the pretzel bits and scooped up the melty ice cream and was happy with that. Bits of the chocolate goodness from the Take Five bar were just OK too, but they tasted a bit stale… Sigh.

Onward and upward. Really hoping they have a fresh cherry sundae on the menu this week since fresh local sweet cherries are everywhere. Stay tuned!

I ordered a small strawberry sundae made with vanilla ice cream and I was not disappointed. What a difference fresh fruit makes. Agree? I don’t like they syrupy sweet fruit toppings most sundaes drown in. The Dairy Lodge got it right with this one! Lovely.

Cherry Festival begins in four days. Do you think they might have a fresh cherry sundae at the Dairy Lodge next week? I’ll make it my official job to check and report back…

And I hadn’t had it in a long time so I thought I’d try it in a flurry. Result? Boring. Too much ice cream, not enough cookie dough chunks this time. I know, I know. Last time I had a flurry, I mentioned that I don’t like all the candy bar chunks, but cookie dough is a different story. Disappointed!

How fun!

While I doubt there were any antioxidant benefits in the latter, it was the most refreshing of the two. The watermelon slushie was super-duper sweet. Almost thick with sugar. Too sweet for a blistering hot day. Black raspberry pomegranate hit the spot. My only complaint is that this frozen sugar water seems pretty expensive ($1.25 for a small) compared to a cone. I don’t know the economics of slushies, do you, dear readers?

And we had a hankerin’ for one of our favorite Michigan-style treats: a Vernors Ginger Ale float. Actually–truth be told–I prefer the cooler (Boston Cooler, some say) form of the frozen confection, but a float it was. And did it ever hit the spot. Vanilla ice cream should definitely marry ginger ale. They are just meant to be together! Speaking of Vernors and ice cream, does anyone remember the Vernors brand ice cream that you used to be able to get at Sanders in the Detroit area? I think Stroh’s used to make it. That used to be my favorite when I was a kiddo.

I had forgotten how much I loved caramel sundaes until I was forced to make a decision about what to order and it jumped out at me from the long list of sundae flavors. It made me so happy to enjoy something so simple and extra creamy as vanilla soft serve ice cream topped with caramel sauce. It wasn’t the best caramel sauce I’ve ever had, but it wasn’t too sticky or over-powering either. Light, creamy, sweet. Scrumptious! AND it was just the right ratio of sauce to ice cream; caramel goodness through to the end of the sundae.

Highly recommended!
